Message From The Director

What a wonderful time of the year! Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays are just around the corner and we feel so blessed to be here in our new location in the heart of Danville at 206 S. Ridge St.

What a long ways we have come by the grace of God since January of this year. To be here in this location and ready for the upcoming winter season knowing that all our friends and donors through the love of Christ have provided such a fine shelter for our less fortunate citizens in Danville and surrounding areas is so awesome!!!

We are ready for our new guests as they arrive here needing a place to get in out of the cold weather. They will find good food, a warm bed and a place to shower and relax while they are looking for work and programs to help move their lives forward.

We want to give thanks to some of our churches who are providing meals for us during our holiday season: We have Shiloh Baptist Church/Pastor Cecil Bridgeforth that will be providing our Thanksgiving Dinner. Then on December 22nd the Blessed Hope Church/Pastor Brian Edwards will provide us with a Christmas meal.

On Christmas Day First Baptist Church/Pastor Stephen Cook will provide us with another wonderful meal. I also want to thank the Guieldfield Baptist Church/Dr. J. Roland Cohen for all the meals they have provided for us. They have provided all our Saturday meals for the whole year! We love you guys!!

We love you all for taking your time to think of all of us here at the House of Hope homeless shelter at such a busy time of the year!!! God bless all of our wonderful donors, and thank you all for your prayers and concerns for our needs to be met. I am so proud to be a part of such a fine community!

We want to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving and a Wonderful Merry Christmas!!!!

God Bless,
-Stephen Anderson, Director

HOH New Ideas
and Connections

Without question this has been an eventful month. In addition to other information covered elsewhere in this issue of "Words of Hope", we've been busy carrying out many progressive and important decisions.

Our Length of Stay Policy has been finalized. The HOH is not a long term housing solution. Our guests visit with us for a period of up to 30 days while at the same time are encouraged to find employment and more permanent housing. The director does have discretion regarding serious extenuating circumstances and repeat visits especially during extreme inclement weather.

This policy is in affect now. Mr. Ronnie Pannell and the director are working on a Case Management File System to track guest progress in finding work, other assistance within the social services system, and in making other more permanent living arrangements

One very encouraging aspect of our transition component is a recent association with the Durham Rescue Mission of Durham, North Carolina. Our director and night manager went to Durham to establish a working relationship with the mission. The Durham Rescue Mission is a three campus 200 bed facility for men, women, and children.

This ministry provides food, safe shelter, clothing, vocational training, job placement, permanent supportive housing, dental, medical, vision, and much more. As our guests complete their 30 day visit with the HOH and are still not able to move into more permanent housing the Durham Rescue Mission is definitely a viable option.

There are just a couple of other important items to share. 1.) I want to express appreciation to all our committee and board members who sacrificially give of their time, energy, abilities and personal finances to the HOH effort. I can't thank you enough! That brings me to this point.

As we near the end of the 2009 calendar year some members will rotate off the committee and board. If there is someone you, as a supporter would like to recommend we'd sure like to hear from you. 2.) The second item I'd like to share with you is regarding the card inserted in this month's newsletter.

Would you carefully consider a pledge commitment for the 2010 calendar year? Businesses, churches, benevolent organizations and individual citizens are the absolute backbone of the House of Hope providing care for our citizens often times at the edge of despair.

Please consider making a commitment of any amount and sending the card in today to give us an indication of what we can depend on in the coming year. Anyone giving as much as $10/month becomes a member of our 120 Club. We will express appreciation to donors in our newsletter and with a tax deductible receipt near year?s end.

Thank you for completing the card and mailing it in. Please do it today. Thank you for everything you do
for your HOH and our guests.
Rev. Donnie Anderson
President, Board of Directors

The House of Hope's Home

On Friday, October 2 the House of Hope took an exciting step of faith into our future: we closed on the purchase of the former Compson Studios building at the corner of Patton and Ridge Streets in Danville!

This opportunity came about for us because of the faithful and diligent support of citizens from every corner of our community who have generously given of their resources to this ministry effort.

In this season of gratitude, know that the guests, staff, and directors of the House of Hope are deeply thankful!

Our ability to make a down payment on the building was the result of a no-interest loan that was made from an anonymous source in our area. The mortgage agreement that we have been able to arrange through owner financing assures us that we will have a fair and fixed interest rate over the term of our agreement.

The tenants who have occupied the upstairs parcels of the building remain with us and the rental income that is generated by their presence enables us to meet our monthly mortgage obligations.

We continue to rely on the generous gifts of our supporters throughout this region. Weekly we find that there are new partners who are assisting us in this vital component of our community's care for its most at-risk residents. With a home to call our own now, the House of Hope is positioned to be an essential partner with all who seek to end homelessness and reach out to persons in need.
