Message From The Director

I bid you good tidings at this most blessed time of the year! We have had some bone-chilling weather in recent days but because of the goodness of God we have been blessed by your support to provide a place of shelter at the House of Hope.

On Tuesday, December 22 Blessed Hope Church (Pastor Brian Edwards) had some of the youth and members of this wonderful church come to share music, gifts, good food and their many warm smiles! We had a wonderful time! Our guests and I would like to say thank you all for the love that you showed us!

Danville and surrounding communities, God bless you for all your love and care that you show year-round to help the House of Hope provide meals, beds, love and a hand up to its citizens who are facing very hard times. I am enjoying working with all of the different services and agencies throughout the community to help our guests move forward with their lives.

The new year brings many challenges, but we know that nothing is impossible with God and that is where we put our trust! Happy New Year and many blessings is our wish for all of you in this coming year!

God Bless,
-Stephen Anderson, Director

HOH President's Message

What an experience I have had serving as your president during the first year with the homeless shelter that has come to be known as House of Hope. Now it is time for that experience to come to an end.

I arrived in Danville in August of 2008 after accepting the senior pastor position at RiverOak Church of God. That calling was, and has continued to be, my chief focus. Upon learning of the Claiborne Street homeless shelter's closing, along with a number of others, my heart was touched and burdened with the thought of no shelter during especially cold months. Freezing temperatures compounded an already troubling situation.

We had a burden, no money and no direction. That all changed very quickly with a very large donation and about 15 interested citizens ready to go to work at getting the shelter reopened. Amazingly, within a two-week time span the homeless shelter was back open, the heat was on, beds were prepared and hot meals were served. The 15 interested citizens grew to 30 then 100 and now hundreds are involved with the work of Danville's House of Hope.

None of this would have been possible without our sponsors. You are unbelievable! The area media rallied citizens, businesses, benevolent organizations and churches; and like an army marching together history has been made.

Over 130 men, women, boys and girls have had a temporary home over this past year when things went terribly wrong for them. It has been my privilege to serve our guests during this year.

Vice-President Stephen Cook, all the Executive Committee, and the Board of Directors have been extremely cooperative and helpful every step of the way. It has truly been a joy to serve with these fine men and women. I also want to express tremendous appreciation to my brother, Steve Anderson who, especially in the early days, literally worked 24 hour days to insure every detail was covered for our guests at the shelter. While Steve continues to be on-call 24 hours he now has a part-time staff that is a real blessing.

In order to focus more directly on other equally important areas I’m resigning the presidency and executive committee December 31, 2009. It will continue to be my honor to serve as a member of the board of directors.

Once again, thank you everyone and may our Lord continue to bless you all abundantly and eternally for your wonderful acts of kindness.

Rev. Donnie Anderson
President, Board of Directors

Celebrating a Milestone, Naming Our Space

With the turn of the calendar page to January we are coming to a milestone in the House of Hope’s life. We mark our first anniversary of operations with a deep sense of gratitude for all that has taken place over the past twelve months in the work of this ministry. Without the support, commitment, and care of people from every corner of our community there is no way that we would be in the place that we are now. Thank you all!

As we mark the occasion of HOH's first birthday members of our board are developing plans for a community open house and celebration in the early months of the year. Watch for more details about this event in the days to come. Likewise, another group from our board has organized and launched a naming rights campaign for the building and its different spaces.

Please consider making a gift in honor or in memory of another. Insure that the legacy of loving kindness that we have seen illustrated over the past year continues for years to come. I and others from our board are happy to talk with anyone who is interested in learning more about this exciting opportunity to share with people in need!

Rev. Stephen Cook
Vice-President

This documentation is required in order for the House of Hope to send the needed receipt that is required by IRS for charitable gifts of $250 or more.

Please know that we are deeply grateful not only for the hundreds of donors who have lent their support in 2009, but also for the pledge commitments that have already been received for 2010.
