Message From The Director

The Director's Article of Appreciation

Wow! Here it is February 2010 already! As of the middle of January the House of Hope has been up and running for one year. This community has been a true blessing to us and we offer many thanks to all of you! Because of you, we have already served 21 guests in 2010. I have had a few guests ask if they could share their testimonies concerning what HOH has meant to them. Here are two of them:

To say that the House of Hope is just a homeless shelter would be a terrible understatement! The building, food, clothes, and beds are all wonderful, but the staff makes it more than that. It's a place of hope, love, and faith. I have spent the last 15 years of my life addicted to crack. I have been to three rehab centers and many psychologists. After being in jail for 3 ½ months I was brought here by my family. Since I have been here the staff has helped me build a faith in God which I know will carry me to a wonderful life! My marriage has begun to heal, my relationships with my children are back on track and I now have a purpose in life to serve my God and my fellow man. The city of Danville should be grateful and proud to have a staff with so much sincerity. I am one person whose life they have helped get on the right track. Thanks so much - Andy

When I was released from prison I was homeless. My self-esteem was at an alltime low. I felt my future was pretty much hopeless. I came to the House of Hope thinking it was just another homeless shelter; a place to stay. It was much more! As its name states, I learned to have faith and hope while a guest. The House of Hope is definitely a beacon for the last, the least, and the lost. I wasn't judged as an ex-felon released from prison. I was shown and taught that God loved me, and His love would take me through the worst of times. Now, I don’t feel hopeless or worthless. My selfesteem is no longer at a low point. I now know that with God all things are possible. Thank you House of Hope - Leonard

Last but not least, we have just had a wedding take place right here at the shelter! We had a woman and a man that met while they were guests here. They became great friends and as of this writing they are now husband and wife! WOW!! God is doing some wonderful things here at the House of Hope.

It is truly a blessing for me as the director to witness firsthand what God is doing in Danville at the House of Hope, your House of Hope! Thank you for all the blessings that you bring to HOH. Without your support through prayers and donations we would not be here. You are making a difference in many lives every single day that our doors are open! From the staff and all our guests thank you so much for your kindness and love!

God Bless,
-Stephen Anderson, Director

HOH President's Message

What a journey it has been thus far! When a person stops to consider all that has happened in the life of this ministry over the course of the twelve short months that we have been in existence, it is truly inspiring to see how far we have come in such a little while.

Were it not for the support of our faithful friends throughout this community who regularly give gifts of loving kindness to keep the House of Hope viable, our area would be at a tremendous loss. Thank you to everyone who participates in the life of the House of Hope! We are where we are because of the prayers, generosity, and goodness of each one of you. We are deeply grateful to some local foundations that have awarded the House of Hope much needed funding that is making a major difference in several aspects of our organization’s life. Thanks to a $50,000 grant from the J.T. Minnie Maude Charitable Truest and a $47,500 grant from the Philip N. and Frances K. Daly Charitable Lead Unitrust we have significantly reduced the outstanding balance on our building debt.

Likewise, because of a $30,000 grant from the Community
Foundation of the Dan River Region that is designated for essential staffing and utility costs, we are in a strong financial position in the early days of 2010. Please understand, though, that the major gifts that we have received from these charitable organizations do not in any way replace our need for continued, consistent support from our primary base of support: individuals, churches, and civic groups who regularly contribute gifts. Remember that we spent more than $85,000 to renovate our new home last spring. We continue to have need for funds that enable us to carry on the work of providing those in need with emergency and transitional shelter, encouragement, and a helping hand.

Finally, a note of appreciation is in order to thank Donnie Anderson for his service as president of the House of Hope during its first year of operations. Were it not for his leadership, vision, and commitment to this cause we could not be where we are. Thank you, Donnie!

Grace and peace,
Stephen Cook
President

Treasurer's Message

The House of Hope is grateful for all of its supporters who have made contributions to our ministry during the past year.

Every dollar given goes to serve our neighbors in need. Tax receipt statements were recently mailed to donors who have given gifts of $250 or more in the past year. We understand that IRS requires a receipt for charitable gifts of $250 or more when the tax-payer itemizes deductions. Year-end donor statements have not been sent for smaller
contributions because those gifts are supported by canceled check records.

Any contributor wishing to have a year-end donor statement may contact the HOH treasurer at P.O. Box 1197, Danville, VA 24543 or email bnwiles@verizon.net.

Anyone who needs a tax receipt for contributions sent directly to American National Bank for the House of Hope’s account should send a copy of the paid check to
the attention of Bob Wiles, Treasurer, Post Office Box 1197, Danville, VA 24543.

This documentation is required in order for the House of Hope to send the needed receipt that is required by IRS for charitable gifts of $250 or more.

Please know that we are deeply grateful not only for the hundreds of donors who have lent their support in 2009, but also for the pledge commitments that have already been received for 2010.
